The Guinness World Records confirmed that Sto.Tomas, Pangasinan broke the world record “the longest barbecue” using Klasika glutinous corn. The feat was achieved during the town’s centennial celebration last February with the 3803.96 meter long corn barbecue grill.

With the official recognition by Guinness, this town has officially grab the title from Montevideo Paraguay. The confirmation was made in an e-mail sent by Kaoru Ishikawa, Guinness record manager based in London, to Dea Que, team leader of the documentation team of the longest barbecue event here. An official Guinness Certificate was also received by the town officials.

Mayor Viven Villar thanked all supporters and exclaimed “all the sacrifices bore sweet fruit with the Guinness record.” She specifically thanked East West Seed Company for the active support in ensuring successful planting of Klasika glutinous corn used in the activity. KLASIKA saved the day for the Guinness bid, because its good eating quality and early maturity has impressed farmers and visitors who were present to witness the Guinness bid.

MACHO Hybrid Sweet Corn – FARMER’s FAVORITE AT LEYTE CORN DERBY By: Ed Noval and Gerry Vinculado
Mr. Eleuterio “Totoy” Indic, of Sta. Elena, Tacloban City, is the farmer cooperator of the sweet corn techno demo farm. He  picked MACHO as the best performing variety  in terms of germination, field performance and ear quality. He observed Macho’s excellent pest and disease tolerance and its big quality ears. According to him,  he had no problem selling his harvest because the traders like its sweet, tender and big ears and is preferred by consumers.
MACHO Hybrid Sweet Corn emerged the top choice of farmers in the corn exhibition  derby held in  Sta Elena, Tacloban City.. Eleuterio Indic, the farmer cooperator who planted several sweet corn varieties from various seed companies,  picked  Macho as the best variety because it outperformed other varieties  in terms of germination, plant vigor and yield.

He observed “Macho has better pest and disease tolerance vis-à-vis other varieties producing big, sweet, quality ears despite the adverse weather conditions.  The SWEET CORN FESTIVAL was one of the highlights of the 119th Fiesta celebration of Tacloban City drawing thousands of visitors from all over the country. It was organized by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist of Leyte, City Agriculturist and local government units.

Among the activities conducted were the technology forum on sweet corn production, sweet corn cooking contest and food tasting.

“A VEGGIE STORY”, EW 25th year AVP, WOWS 6TH NATIONAL VEGETABLE CONGRESS By : Ric M. Reyes
EWPH General Manager Mary Ann P. Sayoc reported East-West Seed Company’s contribution to the growth and development of the country’s vegetable industry in the 6th National Vegetable Congress held in Ormoc City.
One unforgettable highlight  that  caught the attention of participants at the  6th National Vegetable Congress  was the showing of “A VEGGIE STORY” EAST-WEST SEED COMPANY’s corporate AVP. “It’s very entertaining and informative”, says Roger Gualberto of VICSMIN,  “a creative way to learn East-West’s impact on the vegetable industry”.

The “Veggie Story” tells the history of East West Seed Company told lightly through the adventures of Sam and Mato, an eggplant and a squash, as they go on their journey from the vegetable patch, the market and finally the kitchen table.  EWPH General Manager Mary  Ann P. Sayoc introduced the AVP to the 500 participants who came  from different regions across the country. This was followed by a presentation entitled “Assuring Seed Quality  for Greater Farming Productivity” which was presented by Daisy Caraos.
